You need Blender 2.56a!

Postby WarpZone » Sun Sep 18, 2011 3:30 am

Heads up for all the newbies out there scratching their heads out there like I was. The current MakeHuman build ( Makehuman 1.0 alpha 6) absolutely requires Blender version 2.56a I got it to work on one specific 64-bit machine running Windows 7. From there I was able to move the .blend files onto my mac and load them with the latest version of Blender (2.59 at the time of this post.) The output file from MakeHuman needs to be the one named something like basehumanmale2011-25.mhx.

This is really important information, guys. All the resources I've seen recently just say something like "I'm using the latest version Blender" even though the video is several months old. It needs to be right there on the front page next to the download link. Most versions of Blender I've tried WILL NOT LOAD mhx files even though the Addon is visible there in Blender. I don't remember where I learned that 2.56a is the magical version that actually works, I'd spent the whole night trying different things and hunting around on the internet for a clue. Just tell people. Version 2.56a is what works.

(Also, you need to manually check the box to enable the mhx importer Addon in Blender.)

(Also, you need to manually set options in the config file.)

(Also, if you have a thick regional accent that prevents you from communicating, and you KNOW that you have a thick regional accent that prevents you from communicating, why not annotate your video? Text! Text, man! People can't misunderstand you if you just TYPE IT OUT!)

(Sorry for the tone of this post, but it has been an incredibly frustrating weekend. And all of it could have been avoided if you would just make this information AVAILABLE to people!)

People who talk about using the most recent version of Blender are not using alpha 6, but a nightly build (which will become alpha 7).

Well, as recently as a couple of weeks ago, the nightly builds work fine with Blender 2.59 on Windows 7 64bit.

The .mhx rig has been improved so much in the last few months that the files that come with the last stable release of MH are obsolete.

In my experience, this rapid change is a standard feature of alpha software.

I'm downloading the Sept 20 win32 nightly and I'll see how it works.

Sometimes nightly builds get broken by changes and it takes a few days for fixes to be applied.

Edit: The 20 Aug Nightly which uses MHX version 1.6 works fine with Blender 2.59. The 20 Sept Nightly, which uses MHX 1.7, does not (even when version checking is disabled.) I presume that the next version of Blender, 2.60, which I understand will be out shortly, will be updated to MHX 1.7, but in the meantime the latest Blender builds from Graphicall are a good bet.

I just released v 1.8 ;) . It should be in Blender builds from graphicall.org tomorrow.

Different versions are usually not compatible. In fact, the main purpose of the version numbers are to keep the mhx files and the importer synchronized. I often make changes to the rig without updating the version, but sometimes the changes require an modification of the importer. Then the version number is increased.

Then it may happen that things are broken anyway, due to changes in Blender's api. That is beyond my control.
