basic.json rig

Postby SunTzu » Thu Oct 01, 2015 5:54 pm

I need to use the basic.json rig (from MakeHuman version 1.02) with some characters I designed in MakeHuman Night Unstable for Mac (version 1.10). I already tried to copy the two files for basic.json over to the folders for rigs in 1.10, but I think it still needs something for the software to see the new rig I added. Is there a way to do this?

I need to stick with the basic.json rig since my university has already created animations based on that rig, but the basic.json rig is not included in the 1.10 version of MakeHuman.

I also tried to go the other route by copying the typologies from MH 1.10 that I was using and placing them into the proxymeshes directory of the older version, but that doesn't work either.

the problem is they changed things a bit and now you need another (*.mskel ) file to make things work

Core Team question is there a MakeRig tool thats current??

Current, yes. User-friendly, no.

https://bitbucket.org/MakeHuman/makehuman-utils

It's kind of beta.

So is there a way to generate a json.mskel file to use this rig? I'll ask some friends that work with repositories like Bitbucket as that stuff is all Greek to me. Glad to learn, but just not sure how to use that.

I didn't personally use it, but as far as I gather, this is what was used to generate the current rigs/poses. And I didn't have any problem installing it for blender 2.75 (although what to do next was quite another problem :-) ).

Please add basic.json rig back into MakeHuman

Postby SunTzu » Sun Oct 04, 2015 12:31 pm

Could you please add the basic.json rig back into the MakeHuman for future nightly builds? My university has been using that rig in our pipeline (as others may have too) and we would like to stay with a rig that can be used for multiple environments (game engines and virtual reality worlds). I just developed several characters with MH 1.10, but then had to start over with MH 1.02 to keep to the rig in our workflow since the MH 1.10 nightly unstable version for Mac no longer includes the basic.json rig. I would like to contribute assets back to this community in the future and bring other game and VR creatives to use MakeHuman, but that is hard to do if the rigs stop being supported after we've invested in making our own handmade animations for the rigs.

It wouldn't be as simple as adding the file back in place, as we have changed the rig system and file format (rigs are constructed somewhat differently now).
But it would probably be possible to create a new basic.mhskel file that looks a lot like the old basic.json rig.
I'll see what I can do when I have some time.

Otherwise, you could create a new basic rig file, using the blender script at https://bitbucket.org/MakeHuman/makehum ... at=default
Setup the base skeleton in blender from an older export, then use the mhskel export script to generate the file.

To install it, the folder I linked (as well as all the files in it) can simply be downloaded and placed in your blender plugins folder.
Then enable the mhskel plugin.

It works like any other exporter: select the rig you want to export, go to File > Export > mhskel, save to a file.
