Could I use the real 3D face to replace the face of model?

Postby Bingo » Mon Sep 07, 2015 9:09 am

First, thank you for creating such a great open-source project.

I have some questions want to ask for advice. Now I have a real 3D face (obtained by Structure from Motion (SfM)) that saved by the standard .obj format.
Could I use the real 3D face to replace the face of model in MakeHuman?
If so, how to do it? If not, is there any good suggestions?

best wishes.

Yes. If you have a partial mesh, you can cut out the corresponding parts of the base mesh, paste your own vertices and tie them together with faces. Then export the result as a proxy. This can then be used inside makehuman.

You would need to do this in blender and have the MakeTarget and MakeClothes tools installed.

Could you describe what tools and workflow you used to obtain that? I imagine that a lot of people would be interested in deriving a MH face from photographs, me included.

Software like Autodesk 123D (http://www.123dapp.com/catch) and VisualSFM (Created by Changchang Wu) .
The main principle is SFM ,https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Structure_from_motion .

As a tip before you start though: Note that all faces have to be quads for the MakeClothes tool to work. If your mesh consists of tris rather than quads, you will have to clean this up somehow. Also, it will most likely be tricky to tie the parts together if they are of vastly different mesh densities.

You could also use blenders shrinkwrap modifier to apply your custom face shape to the makehuman mesh. This would be a non destructive way and you could retain the UV layout.

Or you could use a tool like R3DS Wrap, works great and you get the very functional face topology from makehuman, allowing you to apply facial animation to your custom face directly thanks to the bone face rig.
