Jagged Edges With Custom Clothing

Postby Hypocrita_20XX » Thu Jun 26, 2014 5:06 am

Hello and good day everyone,

I'm attempting to make some clothing for characters made in MakeHuman, however I run into an issue that makes that goal impossible: a jagged seam sticking straight out that only gets worse when the model gets bigger.

If anyone has any ideas as to what I may be doing incorrectly, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks, and have a great day!

I suppose you use makeclothes with blender. If so, you might have selected body vertices on the human, when you created the vertex groups (common mistake). For this kind of clothing you should select the skirt helper and only the skirt helper.

Most likely you are matching both against body vertices and against clothes helper vertices.
Use vertex groups to control which basemesh vertices to match on, you will want to match to the tight clothes helpers in this case.
See the MakeClothes tutorials for details.

Hello, and thank you both for your response!

Which tutorials should I be looking at? As far as I can tell, I've looked at every tutorial available on this website. As far as the helpers are concerned, my apologies, but I'm not sure I quite understand what you're saying. I can load a mesh with helper geometry, but there's not really much to select: it's all one mesh. If it helps any, I'm using version 0.949 of the MakeClothes add-on.
Basically, what I've been doing is first obviously making the dress, then adding seams, unwrapping, applying a material. From there, I've selected the human model, both with and without helper geometry, and selected "create vertex groups" after then selecting the dress. After that, I hit the "make clothes" button. What part of my workflow needs modified? Apologies again, I'm just not very clear on what I need to be doing differently, although I do understand that it has something to do with vertex groups.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

Mm, I simply don't understand. For instance, I've followed the dress tutorial to the letter, yet I'm still encountering problems. The most I can achieve is a slightly less jagged appearance. It's only in the middle, however. Everything else is just fine.
Is there any sort of tutorial out there that takes you from the ground up when it comes to this topic? Perhaps I simply don't understand the foundation on which this is built.

The dress tutorial does not go in detail about the vertex group step, which is the most important in using MakeClothes (in fact I believe the tutorial completely ignores it). But that's why there are 5 other tutorials to help you with it.
You need to combine the knowledge in multiple tutorials. I know, not ideal, but that's the state our blendertools documentation is currently in. At least the information is there.

I think the diapers tutorial is pretty complete. A few names of buttons might have changed, but the principle is the same. And putting this tutorial next to newer ones you should be able to figure it out.
