OMG! you know when you are a bit behind... i seriously just learnt about blenders sewing springs. crazy i know, so where i would sit and model the clothes mesh from scratch there is actually and easier way using the sewing springs, this essentially allows one to take a sewing pattern, place the fabric "cutout" in front and back of model - connect the edges, assign these to a vertex group and under cloth simulation, cloth sewing springs, shrinkage - assign your group and then press play - and it becomes a lovely fitting piece of clothing..
