Makehuman & Applied Psychology

Postby brkurt » Tue Mar 12, 2013 5:05 pm

I've had various discussions with the team about how to use Makehuman in psychological applications. Tomorrow I will teach a seminar on the subject,
starting with this document:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21596378

The full title is:
Patient demographic characteristics and facial expressions influence nurses' assessment of mood in the context of pain: a virtual human and lens model investigation.

The 2011 research focuses on training nurses to become more aware of patients emtional states by a careful reading of their facial expressions.
The researchers create Virtual Human characters of various demographics, using the (old Windows 98) program People Putty.

You can view the program details here:

http://www.haptek.com/?url=http://www.haptek.com/products/peopleputty/

They matched this program's output to the Ekman Facial Action Coding System! (emphasis is mine). :o

Unless I am seriously mistaken, this software package does not even come close to the power and versatility of Makehuman, especially the upcoming Alpha 8. :D

To this end, I am going to construct a skinless Virtual Patient, so that the mapping to the standard Makehuman mesh can be calculated.

Hello everyone...

On Wednesday, March 27 2013 at 9:00 to 10:30 Saskatchewan time (GMT -6) I will be conducting a demonstration of Makehuman Alpha 7 with my Introductory Psychology students, young women of average age 19. 8-)

We will be focusing on modelling a character, then working with facial expressions, in the manner of Hirsch (2011).

This would be an excellent time for the crew to interact with a user group; if there are questions you would like to see raised, or if you just want to say hello, that would be wonderful. :D

I will publish their results (with their permisssion) on the forum, on this topic. :geek:
