How to match a body 3d scan to the standard template?

Postby ali7739 » Tue Jan 13, 2015 6:52 am

Hi,
I am new to MH. I have 3d body scans, and I am wondering if I can match those to the standard template of MH so I can change for example the size of head or change the hair color or etc. Sorry if it is a redundant question, I could not find this exact q in the board.

You have asked a huge (scary!) question. The biggest problem is most likely that your scan is likley all triangles; it is a gigantic problem because 3d scanner apps are not 3d animation apps; the first is always triangles, the second always quadrangles.

There are programs that a focussed on solving the triangles-to-quads retopology. The best (imho) is 3d Coat. Blender can do this retopology, but it will be a lost weekend for you.

If you are going for a quick solution, then your best bet is to import your mesh into a 3d animation suite like Blender (eg).
After that, create a Makehuman mesh that is as close as you can get.

Export that Makehuman mesh into Blender (eg) --normally on a different layer--and begin the manual process of aligning the topologies.

You will have to fit the MH base topology around the contours of your scanned mesh somehow. Either manually or using shrinkwrap or similar modifiers.
There's also software such as 3DS Wrap that can help with this.

Thank you very much. R3DS was very interesting.
