Licensing Question: Limits on models.

Postby Corpsejacked » Mon May 16, 2011 8:41 pm

I am a indie game developer and want to use makehuman for player controlled characters.

So I understand you can not use the output models for morphing in games, but you can use a selection of static choices.

So the question is how many output models is the limit for character selection?

In my case I would like to have 3 body types for male with 20 heads, 6 body types for female with 20 heads.

Also is there any limits on use for npcs?

As long as you export finished models there is no limit in how many models you can use. The only limitation is that if you use code, the untransformed base mesh or the morph targets, that you need to release your code under the GPL3. But with exported finished models you don't need to do this.

Well I only had the question because of this post in another thread. So I guess what defines a lot.

Hmm..if the software mimic MH (for example, using a lot of predefined sets), it have to be released under GPL 3.
On the contrary, if you use only few sets, and the software is very different from MH, you can just apply the essentials described here:

Well. If the software MIMIC makehuman, using an high number of sets (enough to have a morph system similar to the one in MH) , we will consider it as GPL infrangement. Because you only mix set of full heads and full bodies, your character creator is enough far from us, so you are in safe place.

Of course, if you use the full heads in way of selective morphing, for example making possible to mix nose shapes, eye shapes, etc...you are going to mimic MH and this will be not good.

Best,

Manuel
