Yeah, I wouldn't go above 4k cause it might slow down render times by a large margin.

Here's a comparison of just using one of the built-in skins versus that skin plus wolgade's skin pattern from skin_4.blend:
SkinsSidexSide.png
(you have to view it at full res to appreciate it)

I seem to be too stupid to figure out how to transfer the skin shader. I did an append but have no idea where to look for it to add it in the node editor.
Help?

I get a wierd effect when I render my character with hair:

Looks like the transparent part of the hair is casting a shadow perhaps? I don't know what that swish is though. Anyway, it isn't the shader, it's there when I use the regular shader too, so it's something in the settings in the blend file. (I added my character to wolgade's blend file.)

After you do the append go the materials panel while the body is selected then click on then material name button and select the new material you appended from the drop down list.

Enjoy the Choice :)

No, the node editor is the wrong place. You should do it in the default screen. Select the skin, then material and link the material, which you want to append to the skin. Okay too slow, loki1950 was faster.
After doing this go into the node editor and change it ...

Thank you both. I really thought I had looked there, perhaps I forgot to scroll down? Sigh.

I thought I would have a try at baking so I created a 4k skin combining the young male caucasian 2 diffuse image and wolgade's skin pattern:
YCM2Skin4k.jpg

And I did a render with the generated skin:
RenderWithYCM2Skin4kSubSurf.jpg

Now that I can use the skin shader I can do a render:
RenderWithYCM2Skin4kShader.jpg
Hmm, perhaps I still had my color adjustments on the ones before the shader.

For some reason trying to bake with the skin shader results in black images. Will try again tomorrow.

So I kind of decided to take all of your advices in and use them all :D
So I use the skin shader from the other thread in combo with the skin texture for the character and I also went for 4k for all my textures now (diffuse, bump, etc.) and I sulpt in some missing detail, by using the skin texture itself for reference cuz it has what lacks in the geometry, and baked it on a normal map.

These pics aren't renders cause that powerful skin shader will take hours to render right. But You can see improvement I think.

Wrinkles on the hands

These are just some of the body parts I worked on to improve. I sculpted on the breasts and face, too, but decided not to crowd the post with too many pictures :P

Thanks all. I honestly didn't expect so many responses and interest in the topic :)

Nice results. Especially like the palm detail.
