Extending CC0 exception to user modified data

Postby rez » Sat Nov 12, 2016 8:45 pm

At the moment, if I read the license correctly, the exception is void as soon as I touch any of the data.

Is there any chance to include data modifications in the exception, allow users to generate CC0 output using modified data? The modifications as derived work would fall under the AGPL of course.

Any response from current MakeHuman maintainers would be greatly appreciated, even if it is a simple "No".

It is not so easy. Any change to the license tend to have unintended consequences, and the current setup was something we reached after years of often heated discussions. The reason for the silence is most likely that people don't want to kick that wasp nest again.

Per se I agree with you that the current license has unnecessary restrictions.

What exactly are you referring to when you say "data"? The bundled clothes? It's possible that a workaround would be possible in that case. Since I'm a copyright holder for those I could simply upload them to the user contribution repos under a CC0 license and let people modify them in whatever which way they want.

With "data" I mean the content of the data directory.

A specific example would be the knee joint modifications I did to my local MakeHuman version, replacing the official targets.npz with a modified version. I know MakeHuman supports custom targets, but what if someone wanted to modify the existing ones?

Changing the overall license isn't going to happen anytime soon. It is a big endeavor.

However, specific assets can be released as CC0 upon request.

Thanks for the clarification.

I am currently looking into applying my modifications post export. Sounds stupid, but it is the only option I see atm, before giving up on using MakeHuman.
