Is there no 64 bit version?

Postby artmage13@yahoo.com » Fri Oct 04, 2013 6:51 pm

I just acquired the Make Human app this morning, and found it is a 32 bit app. This causes the app to operate with jerky movements and it will often give me the Not Responding message, forcing me to wait while the memory catches up. I would like to have a 64 bit version if one is available, since the simplest of operations in this version are slow and jerky. If a 64 bit version is not available, is it possible to use Large Address Aware to gain access to more of my system's RAM? I am used to having a smooth work flow, with the work I am doing free of jerky movement and not getting the Not Responding message several times during a work session.

If the LAA is not compatible with Make Human, I would suggest a fix to those that are developers working on the next builds: Develop a 64 bit version, please. I have Blender also and it has a 32 bit and a 64 bit version that gets released simultaneously for each build! I have the 64 bit version, and I regularly update to the latest build every six months or so. When the time permits, I am going to do that this week to the current build of Blender. It would be nice to have a Blender compatible app such as Make Human, that is 64 bit also.

Thank you and Stay Awesome!

It's very odd that it is so unresponsive just because it's a 32bit application.
What operation system are you running this on? And what version are you trying, Alpha 7 or the nightly alpha 8?

For windows it would be hard to have a real 64bit version, because MH heavily relies on the numpy library, which is written in fortran. Due to the lack of decent (open) 64bit fortran compilers on windows, numpy is officially only available as 32bit library on windows. There are unofficial 64bit builds available of python with numpy, but unless we have someone to test and maintain it it will be hard for us to give support on that. It's possible though to get the python source and install the required libraries yourself. (see here for instructions: http://www.makehuman.org/doc/node/runni ... _code.html)

It would probably be possible to package MH with 64bit python and numpy libraries for OSX. In fact I think that the OSX build is 64bit. On linux it just depends on what versions of the libraries you have installed on your system.

In any case I'm surprised that it makes such a difference. MH does not require a lot of memory by modern standards, it does not need 4GB of memory. Also the OpenGL rendering part should be well within the capacities of even basic graphics cards. Most of the performance will depend on how the numpy library performs.
