Problems with subdivision

Postby nullorama » Thu Oct 28, 2010 8:04 pm

Hello, I imported a mesh from MH to Mudbox and tried to subdivide it and it gave me the following problem: "Two or more faces share more than one edge. This model cannot be subdivided until this is corrected." I check the box to highlight the affected edge and I can't find it, I exported the very same mesh into blender to try to correct this (I also tried subdividing it in blender and it worked perfectly fine) but i couldn't find said edge.
This is a screenshot of the error

Any help would be handy!

Could you tell the exact mesh you wanted to import? Was that a wavefront obj file from the data/3dobj folder? Or was it a mesh you exported from makehuman (saved in your makehuman directory residing in your users directory)?

There is a workaround to the problem, but I prefer fixing it. Nevertheless here is a workaround (that I am not sure will work, but just give it a try). Open the mesh in Meshlab. If there is indeed faces sharing similar edges (I think) meshlab will inform you and try to correct it and then save it with a new name and then try again. Please report to us what you did and what happend so that we will know.

Well the mesh was indeed made with MH, what I did was export it to then import it into another applications, when i imported it in mudbox i got that notice when subdividing it.
I downloaded Meshlab but I don't really know how to use it nor if it fixes those errors automatically; this is what i got when I imported the mesh in meshlab, i can't really tell if it was fixed but obviously detects the error.

When you open it with meshlab, it will tell you there are faces sharing similar vertices and if you want to correct this (unify duplicate vertices). Set the checkbox to unify duplicate vertices and press OK. Then try to save the opened obj mesh with another file name also as obj format. Then go back to mudbox and try to open the newly saved obj file and try to subdivide, see if this work. I don't have mudbox so I can't verify this. We have to correct this problem if this is really a fault from makehuman. Could you send us a screenshot of the area of the human body where mudbox marks the bad edges/faces?

You could import into blender, reexport with suitable parts of the mesh removed, and try to load into mudbox. In that way you should be able to isolate the problem part. Some parts which could be tricky:
1. Eyebrows
2. Eyelashes
3. Cornea
4. Inside mouth
Some parts of the mesh overlap, like upper and lower lips and different toes, but that should be fine.

Edit: Does Mudbox merge coincident verts or edges on import? That could change the topology in unexpected ways. Delete the parts that you don't want to sculpt (probably the tricky parts above) before importing to mudbox.

I tried to correct it with meshlab (in filters>cleaning and repairing>remove duplicated vertex) I'm not sure if that's the thing i have to do to correct this. Anyways when i imported it back into mudbox it threw me another error.
Now, i JUST found the bad area, right in the genitalia, i zoomed into that area trying to find the bad edge in blender and i really couldn't find it, here's the screenshot though

I don't really know if Mudbox merges coincident vertices or edges when importing. I'm really new into 3D so there are lots of details i miss. Anyway! there's the screenshot, I did remove the eyebrows and lashes, etc. was quite helpful though :D

Oh, i took a screenshot with the area zommed in as well, forgot to put that.

I think its a makehuman error, I tried with another mesh, different genre and it gave me the same error in the same area, but as mentioned earlier, it could be mudbox that merges coincident vertices when importing.

Thank you for taking the time to do the screenshots. Our modellers are looking into it.

I tried fixing that vertice in blender but it just made the other program crash when subdividing, seeing what i can do as well!
