Fixed in the blog post now also.
That will help folks out until the next alpha comes out.

Installation problems

Postby Tsa de Tsan » Mon May 24, 2010 6:36 am

Hi everyone! I am new, here! :)
I am sorry, but I am totally unable to install makehuman on ubuntu 8.10 . May someone help me?

On the web site is written “.deb packages are available for both 32- and 64-bit versions of Ubuntu 8.10. Download and run the file appropriate for your version. The installation process will be started. After the installation, Makehuman will be available in the applications menu.”

I looked on the website and I found 4 versions: Ubuntu/Debian i386 (deb), Ubuntu/Debian amd64 (deb), Ubuntu/Debian i386 (tgz) and Ubuntu/Debian amd64 (tgz) ...mmmhhh: what's the difference? I don't know, but I downloaded all four, hoping that at least one will work.

i386 (deb): it is a zipped file, I unzipped it and I found 2 other zip files: control.tar.gz and data.tar.gz2 . I unzipped both. In the first I found a text file with the description of the program, in the second I found a directory called usr; inside usr there are two directories: bin and share. Inside bin there is an icon called makehuman, I tried to click, but it does nit work in any way. Inside share there are many other things, but anything looks usable.

amd64 (deb): it is a zipped file, I unzipped it and I found the same things that I found in i386(deb), with the same unworking strange things.

i386 (tgz): this is different. I unzipped the file and I found one directory called “makehuman”. Inside there are 13 directories and 14 files. The exe file has the icon of the unexeguibles files; anyway I tried to click on it, but nothing happened (see pic1).

amd64 (tgz): equal to i386 (tgz)

I am quite sure that “Makehuman” can be a very good program but... do I need to be graduated in Informatics for using it? May someone help me? Thank you very much.

Generally DEB is what works the best.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deb_%28file_format%29
You should not need to unzip the file.
I have never need to use the other format.

32 is for 32 bit systems and 64 is for 64-bit systems.
You should let the package manager install the program (and check for dependencies) and you should not need to install from source in most instances.
I say this as that is the Ubuntu recommended way of installing.
From the Ubuntu help file:
You can download and install applications from websites. These applications are contained in Debian (.deb) packages. To install a Debian package:
1. Download the package from a website.
2. Double-click the package. It will be opened in the Package Installer.
3. Click Install to install the package.

Instructions for DEB files are here: http://mh.jwp.se/deb.php .. While the dependency information is slightly out of date, the installation instructions are still correct.

Quick and easy way for installation in ubuntu is to download the DEB file to the desktop and double-clicking it. This should launch the graphical installation tool.

But...... I am sorry, but....

When I do a double click on amd64. deb, the installer says Error: wrong architecture 'amd64' and when I do the same with the i386.deb, it says Error: dependency is not satisfiable: python2.6

I am totally unable

You might consider updating the version of Ubuntu you are using to a newer version.
System > Administration > Update Manager >

If you need to play it safe, it can help to wait about 2 weeks after a new Ubuntu version comes out for the teams to find and fix most of the glaring bugs.
Lucid has been out a while now - over two weeks. I find each version just gets better and better.

Might be MakeHuman needs a newer version of Python?

Ah, yes. The problem here is that your ubuntu is too old to have the necessary libraries available. Unless you are willing to try to compile the binary manually, I have to agree that upgrading the system is the best option.
