Export Low poly/detail model

Postby nphillips » Tue Apr 01, 2008 10:06 pm

Is there a way to export the model without carrying over some of the more detailed aspects?

I'm essentially looking for a model that's just a glorified mannequin. No eyes, no lips, no detailed muscles. Just a basic shape of a person with the right proportions and appropriate number of protrusions.

Thanks in advance :)

Are there any workarounds for this?

Until there is some way to lower the triangle count, this is useless in games. Can blender lower the polygon count?

It appears that makehuman models are around 25000 triangles. That number should be lowerable to 5K, 3K, 1K (for different LOD). This and the current rigging issue are the only show stopping problems for makehuman and usage in games.

I use MeshLab, from: http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/
It has amazing filters for smoothing and poly reduction.
I know it's another process step, but it is a very useful tool.
Runs on a number of operating sys as well; Win32 / linux / MacOX etc

Hi,

Blender has two methods you might try. With mesh selected--

In Edit mode use Mesh -> Scripts -> Poly Reducer.

From Object mode, under editing panel (F9) add a Decimate modifier and dial it down to
an acceptable level of detail

Hope this helps!

I would be very interested in a feature that reduces the poly count to 1000 or less.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is the direction MakeHuman is headed. I could be wrong and it's a nice idea, for game developers, but I can understand why, if such a feature wasn't developed in-house by the MakeHuman team. It would likely require alot of recoding and redesign of their original mesh object. Not to mention targets and selectors. A great deal of time and effort would be required for this. I don't mean to shoot this down or be a party-pooper, in fact, I'd like to see this also. Keep the momentum going and maybe a third-party developer will pick up the idea and make it happen. Also, you might want to look into the Python version when it becomes available. Chances are, it will be far more modifiable/adaptable than the C++ version.
