I think Badwolf may be right that trying the portable version of MakeHuman and Blender might be a good test. Blender Portable might still be 2.77a but it will do for test and you could upgrade it later.
They can be installed to the root of your C drive, but I would suggest that if you have a spare USB flash drive or USB external hard drive you might install to one of those to reduce the possibility that permissions are causing your problems. That could just be for a test and give you a chance to see that they do work.

I put together a "Quick Start" guide that in 12 steps takes you from downloading the files to having a character in Blender. The steps vary in length but I tried to illustrate what you would see for each step as long as there are no errors. When you finish one step go to the tab for the next step.
