Reusing models from old versions

Postby Graptopetalum » Tue Feb 25, 2014 9:30 pm

I've just deleted my old version of Makehuman and installed 1 Alpha 8. The trouble is that I can't find my models from the old version. They don't seem to be stored in any obvious place or with obvious names. I've still got my old files in trash so I could probably extract them from there. Can somebody tell me how to find them? Can old models be used in 1 Alpha 8 or can they be imported as MHX (as I still have those).

In order to find your older makehuman data you should look at you home check in you My documents folder if you are on windows or in your home ~/makehuman if on linux if I remember correctly (its been a long time since I have used the a7 stable)

As for the second question; no, old models cannot be reused in A8 for several reasons. The primary reason being that the base mesh for A8 is entirely different from that of A7. The entire topology, vertex count and more importantly vertex ordering is different. So using older models which have a different vertex order will not work with MHA8. it is bound to create several problems such as distortion etc. It is important to note that the old textures are not compatible with the new base mesh either.

If however you want to use old assets E.g. old clothes etc. you can use them with A8 provided you refit the old clothes to the new base mesh and use the new "makeclothes" script to recalibrate the clothes to fit and work well with the new next generation mesh in A8.

The files of old A7 are still on your disk. You can't use them with A8. For that reason A8 stores its files in a slightly different location.

A7 files:

A8 files:

Thanks, I've found the files now but can't load them into A8. This is really annoying as I have models of children I want to add clothes to (my previous version didn't do clothes) and age for a sequel project.

This would not be possible in any case. The clothes are fit to the basemesh, and in A8 the basemesh changed completely. Additionally the targets have been completely remodeled to prefer visual quality and correctness over backwards compatibility (looking like A7 models with the same parameters).
Even if MH would allow you to load the modeling parameters from old MHM files, your model would probably look entirely different. Because of this, we have decided not to spend time on having backward compatibility between mhm fles of A7 and A8 versions.
Future versions of MH will remain compatible with the mhm files produced by A8, though, as we will not change the basemesh.
