Exactly what it says. It thinks that the clothes, or whatever you are trying to fit against the human, are too far away from the human to get a good result. It refuses to match it.

Try modeling your proxies closer to the body, or vertex group it to geometry closer by your model.

If this is not an option to you and you want to persist in matching, you'll have to modify the MakeClothes script.

What model were you trying to run through makeclothes?

I've exported an mxh from makehuman with a human with the basic costume clothing item on. I then modified the shirt and added it in to another blender file and i'm trying to run the shirt through makeclothes.

If it is a regular fitting shirt then it should work.
Check your vertex groups, you're probably attempting something like fitting the shirt to the legs only.

Thomas: what does the "check human and clothes scales" message mean? From what I could test, MakeClothes takes into account object scales, so that's probably not what it means.

Okay. I've successfully made it, but now when I try to apply it to the character in MakeHuman (I'm using 1.0 Alpha 7), It appears in Libraries -> Clothes, but when i click on it it just does nothing. The preview for the clothe is also a "?".

The version of MakeClothes in svn does not work with alpha 7. The MH mesh is totally different between the two versions.

Ok. Where can I download a precompiled installer? Or do I have to compile it myself?

All MH code is python, so it does not need to be compiled. You can find the latest version in the svn. Or you can download a nightly packaged zip file from the website.
