You may yet hope! I got or Blender 2.56 particles-2010 r35563 linux 32bit to run like a bunny on Ubuntu 10.10.
The trick is to open a Text window in Blender, and pull the import script out of Makehuman. (I always unzip the .tbz file to an folder called Experimental, so that I can grab scripts, and alter texture pngs.)
When you run the script, you'll be fooled at first, because all that happens is that a second Import mhx menu item appears in the Menu; just click on the second--newer, at the bottom of the menu--and it works fine.
This may not do it for windows or mac, I'd suggest having a flash drive with Ubuntu loaded just in case you really need that new Makehuman figure. I needed it for my Psychology class.
