That's a default install. But in Gnome, if I look under System -> Appearance -> Fonts, I have some of the standard options like Sans, Serif, and quite a few other fonts that I don't think are as common. Maybe those fonts are restricted to the window manager though, so maybe they aren't used at the X level?
If Makehuman is looking for fonts at the X level, then that could explain the odd behavior with text, since I don't seem to have "normal" xlsfonts installed.
Thanks for the package names... that should be enough info to install them, unless the package names have changed. I'll try installing those right now.
