Render layers isn't helping memory usage like it's supposed

New to compositing but trying to use it to cut down on memory usage and many people have recommended layer rendering. I set it up correctly with holdout enabled for each object I want to remove from the render layer. When it was just one object in my scene I was using around 7.5gb of vram on the render, when I added the second object that went to 10gb. When I render each layer (with holdout objects) it still uses 10gb on each layer https://omegle.onl/ vshare .

I've ensured that "render single layer" is enabled and that it is infact only rendering one object at a time.

What am I doing wrong?
