Nearly black, but not quite.

I'm convinced there's something odd going on here. Check out this:

Now this is not quite black and it is showing up as transparent with the specular the only thing showing the tunic is even here.

why are the nearly black areas not showing up inside MH?

My guess is you have not properly setup your ambient reflection. Blender ignores that material property for rendering, for some reason, but MakeHuman does use it.
