shoes.

I hate to ask this here, but here goes: anybody know of a demo or tutorial that shows making shoes? My dozen or so attempts have been epic fails.

In particular I want to make high heels for female characters.

I've made quite a few, but I focus on hiking boots, which are comparatively easy.

How comfortable are you in Blender? The way I usually do it is to export the base mesh in Wavefront format, and use the soles of the feet, by creating an edge loop at the bottom of the feet, making 'Sole_L' and 'Sole_R' vertex groups and then separating (ctrl + p) them out, either by deleting the rest of the mesh, or by duplicating them.

That will give you a 'Dr. Scholl' type insole (also known as a 'last') that you can then build up by extruding vertices. Use edge loops as much as possible.

Finally, use the Shrinkwrap modifier with a distance of .20 from the base mesh. You will get a nice soft shoe-looking thing.

The rest is up to you. Just remember that high heels are built as a series of shaped cubes, and you will be fine. :)

If I recall correctly, shoes were matched to a very conservative selection of tights helper vertices (might even be a ring around the ankle or something)

It probably was a ring around the sole part of the foot or something, excluding the toes.

and a year ago I'd be scratching my head going "what is he trying to tell me?

I hadn't thought about the Dr Scholl method. Makes a lot of sense to me. Once I'm happier with my clothing making skills I am going to start releasing what I make CC-0. I'm on my fifth or so attempt at making futuristic mil-spec body armor. So far not happy with any of them.

I have a few skirts, dresses and shorts for the ladies that I'm going to go back to and apply "lessons learned" to. For the men I have workout cloths (military style) and a "underarmor" suit made to go under body armor. Also going to need some work. I wanted a carbon fiber-esque texture to it and that didn't work out yet except when I work in Cycles.

I'll get the hang of this blender thing yet.

Since you're trying so hard, I'll do this pair of shoes for you. What I will need is the Makehuman .mhm file of the model you are working with, and a picture of the kind of high heels you need. Should be done tonight. :)
