AppImage for Linux users

Postby rafaellinuxuser » Fri Sep 06, 2019 1:40 pm

As you know, the Linux ecosystem is beyond Ubuntu and, as an OpenSUSE user, I would like to use Makehuman without waiting for a future specific OpenSUSE version, so please, consider create an AppImage for Linux users. That way Linux users of any flavor can test and notify bugs even in beta or alpha versions. Applications like Blender, KDEnlive, Digikam, Krita ... they have AppImage available for Linux users.

Thank you

Thank you for the suggestion.
Yes, I believe https://appimage.org/ would be a good way of packaging MakeHuman.
Is there someone that would like to look into it?

Since makehuman is an all Python app running the source version is always an option it even behaves well when run in user land.

Enjoy the Choice :)

I am using openSUSE and source version of makehuman from git without any issues. You just need python for it to work.

I'm a mortal, and i would really appreceate having makehuman portable for Linux. I don't understand all that mercurial thingy, and source code is something my computer has to understand, but not me. When i need a surgery, i don't cut into my flesh myself, and when my car is sick, i don't study how to build a motor. That's how i think a tool should work. So, yeah, awesome idea!

All that Appimage or Deb/rpm do is put the source code in a place that the OS expects it to be then sets up a shortcut that is the menu entry one of the main reasons that I use Linux is that I have control of my computer not M$ so I have looked under the hood shall we say.

Enjoy the Choice :)

I put together a basic AppImage, using pkg2appimage. I have not posted a binary release, but the pkg2appimage file used is attached. The page for pkg2appimage explains how to use it, and if anyone wants to improve on and subsequently publish the recipe or binary, that would be a great way to solve the issue.
