New makehuman.org website design

Postby johnroper100 » Mon Jan 30, 2017 1:51 am

Hi guys!

My name is John Roper (http://jmroper.com) and I am a web designer/3D/MakeHuman enthusiast. For a personal project and also as my way of giving back to the community, I have started work on a redesign of the website. Currently, I am hosting the new version on my own server at http://jmroper.com/makehuman/ and I am keeping the source code on GitHub at https://github.com/johnroper100/makehuman-web. For those of you who are unable to go to either of those websites, I have also posted a picture of the main page (index.html) below.

My current status:

I have the homepage, release notes, downloads, and team pages done.
The gallery has the list of galleries (see below) but not the actual galleries themselves.
For news, I have decided that it would be better to keep it here and I put a link in the navbar that is 'Community & News'

The entire website is 98% mobile compatable and responsive which really helps get more users on the site in this day and age. Also, although used for the random header images, JavaScript is not required and the site works exactly the same without it. (Minus different header images of course)

I would love to see what you all think. By the way, if you are looking for an admin/webmaster for either website I would be willing to help. You can see my previous work at my portfolio (link above).

While I really like your design, there are a few external circumstances stopping me from using it.

The foremost is that makehuman.org is currently outside my control. I can't edit it. I can only work with makehumancommunity.org. This might change in the future, but currently there seems very little I can do about it.

The second is that things are not that easy. The site(s) run on a set of different systems combined into a whole. The main site run on drupal. The forums run on phpbb. The bugtracker runs on redmine. Changing the visual look would require making themes for these systems.

However, if you are interested in taking a look at these themes I'm up for discussing this.

If I ever get control over makehuman.org, I'll drop the current makehuman.org site and merge the remaining parts into makehumancommunity.org, so the system will remain drupal/phpbb/redmin.

I am already in contact with the domain owner. Having another person joining this already difficult discussion isn't going to help matters.

Even if makehuman.org was lost forever, it's a good idea to see how the other "external circumstances" could be removed. It's a good, inviting and visually appealling design. I already said this a while back: Let's act as if MH was for sale and present it that way. The long version can be found here: http://www.makehumancommunity.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=13469

Yes, as said, I like the design. And I'm open for adopting it on makehumancommunity.org if it can be converted to drupal and phpbb themes.
