Ellie (Last of Us) hair

Postby learning » Mon Mar 14, 2016 11:40 pm

I've adapted the hair of Ellie, character from the game The Last of Us, to MakeHuman. The model itself I've got from here: http://tf3dm.com/3d-model/ch-152.html I didn't edit it too much, just fitted the hair on top of MH base human, but it took some time to get rid of all tris. The result seems more or less usable within MH, even if some deformations lead to small artifacts.

I'm not uploading it to the contrib section because I'm not sure whether it considered a sin by theology of the creepy copyrast cult some people here seem to follow or be forced to follow by their respective governments. Use as you see fit at your own discretion.

I love it, but no, the original model is pretty clearly labeled as being for personal use only, which means you probably can't transform it and then post it for other people--and if doesn't matter if it's here it in the contributions section. I'm not even sure you can post the picture. However, it would be great for you to tell us how you did it.

I've already said in no uncertain terms that I don't follow your copyrast religion, please stop trying to force it on me and don't ever preach it to me again. I'm well aware that this cult grew to the position of state religion in certain countries and spreads censorship and oppression to the parts of the internet it manages to control. If you live in one of such countries, I feel bad for you but there's little I can do to help. Luckily, this forum is based in Sweden so it's less censored. And really, if it was up to me, I'd choose moving the forum over censoring its contents in any circumstances.

Having looked at the original link, I don't see any copyright violation in reposting it here. It will be up to the individual downloading it from here to decide on how/whether to live up to the original license terms.

However, learning: If there had been a copyright violation, that would have been on me, even in sweden. I'm ultimately responsible for the content posted here. Admittedly, the worst that would have happened is that someone might have complained and then I would have removed the post, and that'd be it. But still, the responsibility falls on me.

There is also quite a large difference between thinking the copyright and intellectual property construct used in the western world is absurd and hurtful (which I can sympathize with), and knowingly violating the implicit agreement you enter when using something someone shared with you without asking anything in return other than respecting a few basic and not very hard to follow rules.

Basically, if you think telling the author of this piece to go screw himself over his terms is ok, then you'd also be ok with microsoft taking MakeHuman and turning it into MS Human and not sharing it under an open source license?

Yeah, I knew there wasn't any real danger, otherwise I'd contact you beforehand. Still, if you need somebody to take a fall for you, I can do this. I live in a country where copyrast laws don't really hold power. (And I have to say laws in general don't really have much power here, much more important thing being who you are and whom you know. This apparently can be a good thing.)

To be quite frank, I'd be okay with that. All in all licenses tend to cause more harm than good, even most well-meaning ones created in the best faith. For an instance, GPL family was created as a way to fight copyrightists with their own weapon, and although I can't help admiring the tactical genius of such a move, ethical and social implications turned out less than ideal. As much as I respect RMS (happy birthday to him btw!), I don't really care for the license-worshipping and formalist culture he created. We as engineers and software developers and "IT people" in most general sense have basically allowed lawyers to run our industry. How's this any good for it?

So what if MS took MH codebase and made a non-free fork of it? We'd still have our code that we could develop further, and users would certainly prefer the open version to the closed one, as long as the closed one doesn't have any totally revolutionary new features. If MS did add new features in its fork, we could reverse-engineer and backport them to our own version. The MS advertising would help reach out to a lot more people that aren't currently aware of MH. At least some of them after trying "MS Human" would look up and find the project it's based on and eventually join our community. So, if anything, such a move by a corporation would be, in grand total, a major incentive to MH development. Licenses and court trials, on the other hand, are just showstoppers.

All that said, I'm aware my views on copyright are rather extremist as far as Europe goes. I am willing to look for a compromise that would allow the believers to follow the licenses while in the same time avoiding censoring and removing people's contributions. Maybe such a compromise would be adding more types of licenses to the contrib section, for example together with CC0 and CC-BY add things like CC-BY-NC, Personal use, Educational etc. Then whether people would follow the licenses would be up to them and not you.

I limited the possible choices in the contrib section knowingly in order to avoid problems like above one arising for users downloading from the section. With CC0 as default and CC-BY as option, users can be pretty certain to not run into borderline discussions about what's allowed or not.

And if someone wants to use another license... well, there are other places to upload stuff.

Anyway, regarding censoring, I hope it has become apparent I that I go to some lengths to avoid doing that. So far I remember having deleted one thread in total, and that was because it had degenerated into a flame war about religion and was completely off-topic.

But I would probably conform to a copyright takedown request if I deemed it valid. This haven't yet happened during the eight years I've been involved in MH though.

"educational", "personal use only", "non-commercial use" etc, and as far as I understand how the license magic works, this should transfer to derivatives.

Yeah, I find such licenses a bit too restrictive. It makes the downloadables being of very limited end use. Which is why I don't want to encourage such in the user repos here.

If I end up adding such options, it'll be under variations of CC though (CC-NC, CC-SA etc).

The curse of having administrative access... I must've confused the "quote" and "edit" buttons.

Sorry for that.

I don't think there's an undo function though, so I don't know how to repair it.
