More detailed male model texture

Postby o4saken » Tue Nov 10, 2015 1:32 pm

OK so been working on trying to get a better male model texture. This is the first time i have ever tried to do something like this, and quite honestly it turned out more difficult than i imagined.. Anyways, this is what i have so far, which i am liking.. there are however a few issues. firstly as the model i was working on had pants in blender, the texture on the legs is a bit messed... this still needs quite a bit of work to fix, however this is not an issue if using pants on the model.
secondly there is something wrong with coloring where the shoulder meets the back on his back, you can clearly see the seam... again will be working to fix this, but am battling. Finally is that it is lighter on the right hand side, thus lighting should always be from that side. Other than that i think it works rather good, so anyways, here it is. If someone out there reading this decides to download it and is able to fix the minor issues i would appreciate it then that you re-share it on here.

Cool!
Thank you for sharing it, it might inspire others.
I quickly created a material definition for it to use in MakeHuman (see attachment), it's not perfect though and can still be tuned.
Unzip the file in data/skins/o4saken/ (or something similar), download the two texture images and place them in the same folder, and you will be able to select it from the Materials > Skins tab in MakeHuman.

The skin could still be improved though, there's visible seams around the UV edges, the ribcage is not aligned 100%, and the stomach area contains visible seams where textures were blended. But it's a good start :)

Great work! This is exactly the kind of asset that we have too few of.

Definitaly great. Mainly I see two reasons why we don't have more assets like this:

  • They're hard to do. You don't find many information on how to do it. I tried something like this myself. Removing specularity and shadows from reference photos is painful. Sometimes it's impossible. You can't turn black or white into a matching skin tone. After you suceeded with one photo, you have to repeat this with every other photo. Then you realize that your processed photos look different. You'd need some kind of color matching. No hope with GIMP.
  • Copyright issues. You might find some reference photos on the internet. Don't forget to ask for a permission before you publish your texture. It's derived work from a copyrighted photo. Even if you go to 3d.sk and pay for a licence, you're not free to publish your texture under CC0. CC0 means "no restrictions", 3d.sk says e.g. "no pornography". There are very valid reasons for this restriction, but it prohibits the use of CC0.

No, I don't agree. There's no reason nor excuse for a "no pornography" or any other "no using in a particular way" restriction, period.

As for the texture, in current state the model looks all kinds of weird. Hope it can be fixed.

Yea as i said its far from perfect, it definitely still needs work especially with the back that is a mess, I will sit and do some work on there once i get a chance.. I will also be trying to fix the hips. i shared this knowing it was work in progress, but for now it works if you have a front view.

OK so after seeing the post above where the image looks very bad, i decided to have a look at why because it looked worse than i remembered it. Firstly i am not sure how bump maps are controlled in MakeHuman, that map is very strong, i am rendering it through blender and you have to turn it down to 0.003 about. Also i am not sure if the UV mapping is slightly different using the texture directly in MakeHuman as apposed to using it in blender, because in blender the white on his side is definately more like a pants line.

Lastly i will add that the texture is a bit dark, but this is due to the fact that when you add subsurface scattering, like all skin has, it becomes lighter.. so i figured if its too light to start with the texture will be lost..

Anyhow i am more than willing to put more time into this, therefore it is nice having feedback to help clarify areas that need work.

And here is a not perfect example of when subsurface is added, the texture becomes a lot softer.

Here is without subsurface, but you can see the white line on his hip is straight in line with where pants would go

I'll put my cycles station to some use tonight and do a few close-up studies for various scenarios.

Alright so after the appreciation of this i decided i would put more effort in to it.. so many thanks to everyone's comments giving me the encouragement to keep going :D . So today i did a lot of cleaning up, replacing some of the original MakeHuman textures that i had messed up (the red things on the side, not even sure what they are :( ) my focus was to fix the terrible back, then fixed a bit of lighting errors and finally did work on the hips... Happy to say that it is getting there..
I am not too happy with the normal map... will work on that tonight when i get home..

But Anyways here is the hopefully improved texture..

The pics are just very quick renders, nothing fancy, just to see the result
