TortoiseSVN is now burning my CPU very often.

Postby DavidBrennan » Fri Aug 02, 2013 2:19 am

To get the latest updates for MH 1.8, I followed the directions at the MH page and downloaded TortoiseSVN. This has worked well for the past few months....except that in the past couple of days, my CPU has been grinding away (loudly) and every time I go to my Task Manager to identify which process is causing that CPU overload, it always comes up as some TortoiseSVN process. This is NOT at times when I'm downloading MH or anything else. TortoiseSVN is just doing something on its own, and I don't know what.

Even when I then kill this TortoiseSVN process in my Task Manager....it just starts up again a few minutes later.

I have looked through the TortoiseSVN settings to try and determine whether this is auto-update or what, but I couldn't identify why this has been happening.

So, if anybody knows what settings to adjust on TortoiseSVN so that it only runs when you tell it to, that would be great. I've already looked in my Startup files, and it's not listed there. So I don't know what else to do. But it's just loud and is eating up precious processing power.

Thanks as always.

I don't use it, but maybe some of these articles has your solution:
http://www.activo.com/performance-tip-h ... rtoisesvn/
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... ZVnL6eDLRI
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... 5-lJqtIobg
http://jim.bernatowicz.net/forum/tortoi ... vncacheexe

It seems to be related to the caching mechanism. You could try disabling it, as is explained in the first post.

I'm guessing it's the tortoisesvn shell integration that plays up (i.e how you get the green icon on the directory and there's a context menu when you right-click it). Just for fun you could try to disble the shell integration temporarily and reboot to see if that helps. The MH SVN repo is very, very large as far as SVN directories goes, so it's not surprising that a background caching/updating mechanism would play up. It it turns out it is the shell integration, you could keep it disabled until you need to update, or simply keep it off and update using the command line tools instead.

Also, are you keeping your makehuman directory on a mechanical hdd? You could try defragmenting if you have been running updates for a while. A SVN checkout of MH contains lots and lots of small files that may become fragmented.

Thanks duststorm and joepal.

The first link in your reply provided an apparent solution (although read the comments at that post, as one of the two steps in that solution is not necessary and could be detrimental).

Basically just: Icon Overlays > Status Cache > None.

Hopefully, this solves it for good. Great thanks, guys.
