Thanks for the link. Even if I prefer particle hair, I learned that there's a lot of stuff that can be done with curves.

Upside with this approach is that it should be reasonably easy to create MakeHuman hair by converting the curves to meshes. They'd be pretty dense meshes unless reduced though.
