Not really surprising, given that Windows can't really into CUDA and number-crunching in general.

The surprise is that most of nVidia's tools have been Windows and DX based for so long though I do have the CUDA tool kit installed on MInt 17.

NVIDIA people can be called many things, but stupid is not one of them. They know their markets. When providing support for videocards used mostly for gaming and gaming industry, of course they focus on windows users (windows is for gaems!!!1) But for all more or less advanced computation one has to use *nix, no way around it.
