Old Makehuman

Postby JESTERRRRRR » Thu Jun 23, 2022 10:03 pm

I was playing around with an older version of MH earlier. I think it's 1.0 alpha 7.

Has anyone else who regularly uses MakeHuman tried it? I hope I don't offend anyone with this opinion, but I think the old model is superior in so many ways. One of the things that particularly bothers me is the default male in current MH:

Here is the same, default male, in 1.0a7

Obviously both of the underlying base meshes have problems, of which the newer version I know has been discussed here before. To my eye though the older one is far superior in a few areas - the waist, chest, shoulders, underarm area, back. It has some geometry for the collar bone, and also includes the thing in inside corner of the eye. The older one is too low poly and some areas like the legs really suffer compared to the newer version, with the exception of the knees which again I think are better on the older version.

I haven't tried all the targets yet. The does seem to be better made overall however. And if you smooth/subdivide it you get past the low poly issue and I honestly think I prefer the old one (it's still not perfect by a long shot).

I would like to see more accurate poly flow to anatomy. The current one is very generic, basically just a cloth in human form. I think it has a better shape for the head, but the rest of the body could do with the poly lines following the musculature more. I've built my own human, and while a long way from perfect, I hope it illustrates what I'm getting at, even if it lacks detail. Certainly key features like the collar bones, abdomen etc could be better represented than they are currently in MakeHuman.

Did you try the muscular proxies? You can find them at the Geometries > Topologies tab.

Looks incredible, especially the upper torso which I usually struggle with. Great loops defining the muscles. Obviously how it deforms would be a separate critique. Out of curiosity, how many triangles is that (excluding subsurf)?
