Adding custom measurement-based modifier

Hi, I walked around the measurement source code and partially understood the implementation.
What I want to do is to add another custom measurement modifier and its measurement. This seems to require specifying vertex indices and their increase/descrease offsets.
I would like to ask how the developers of the measurement-based modifier module find the vertices/offsets. Do they manually process base.obj ? or do they use some automation?

This code was written by Jonas and Manuel years ago, but I think the answer is they did it manually with the help of some custom throw-away code to identify individual verts.
