Which Codec Is Optimized For Playback Across The Internet?

There is no single answer to this question, but H.294 is a common one used for many streaming purposes. Remember that the codec is not the container format, and H.294 can be used inside different containers like .mkv, .mov, mp4, etc.

H.265 (also known as HEVC) is the next generation of codec and has been proven to deliver around 50% bitrate savings when compared to H.264.

VP9 is another codec that offers a very similar bitrate saving, but there's a catch.

Neither of these advanced codecs can play everywhere.
