Changing Hair color

Postby Katronix » Fri Sep 04, 2015 11:53 pm

Hey all, was curious what is the easiest way to change hair color? or make new hair designs?

I've tried checking for a tutorial, and what I found were years old so wasn't sure it was still relevant.

Thanks,

Kat

The only way that has ever worked for me was to go the "~/makehuman/v1/exports/textures subfolder, and pull the hair UV texture image up in GIMP. That's the Linux location and app, but in Windows you would probably used PhotoShop.

You need to rotate the hue, or change the color balance, depending on how strong or weak a new color you want.

GIMP works just fine in Windows, and has the merit of being free. With a little tweaking of parameters, it will neatly pick out just the relevant portions of a material PNG (that is, the hair, not the background), and then you can apply all sorts of transformations.

The original PNG files can be found in the relevant sub-folders of the "data" folder in the Makehuman application folder. Normally you'd add custom geometries to the analogous folder under the Makehuman folder in "Documents", but you'd have to copy over the whole hair object, and delete the original. If you just drop the new PNG alongside the original, with a different name, you'll be able to choose either for that hairstyle on the "Materials" tab.

one of the ways I change up the color of the polygon hair is to take the default texutre, feed it to an RGB mixer in add mode and tinker with the added color until I get the hair color I'm after. This works well for the eye lashes and eyebrows as well.

Of course this is being done in Cycles...
