Bone edits in blender don't affect pose mode

I can move the bones in edit mode, and I expect the changes to appear in pose mode-but they don't. E.G., I shortened the next bone of a character in edit mode by selecting the end of the bone along with all the bones in the head and dragging them lower. I can see my edited bone/rig, but it has no effect on the pose or the model. It seems like the model/mesh has to be remapped to the bone edits, but I'm so new I can't figure out how to do this. Thank you for any help!
