Custom Cothes and vertex groups

So guessing this is a common problem.
Downloaded some custom clothes but when assigning they don't 'fit' even close!
A quick search suggest I need to assign 'vertex groups'

Can anyone point me to a relevant tutorial?

Hard to tell what you mean by "some custom clothes". From the MH repository or the broader Internet? If from MH repository, I have a hard time understanding the "don't fit even close" part, because that just shouldn't be generally true.
