Skirt Helper Length

Postby Elvaerwyn » Sun Apr 08, 2018 9:23 am

Is there a way to make the skirt helper long enough to *help* with gowns and any clothing south of the ankles? Moreover is there a way to adjust helpers to custom proportions for future projects or create new helper objects that makeclothes can recognize?

So I decided to edit existing helper objects and had wild results as expected. When editing width or length of helper skirt, skirt deformities go away but distances from body to clothing item increase, suggesting a dependence on distances between vertexes to *help*. This was tested on a very very large skirt in attempt to create some riverboat garments for a previous request from community. When changing the vertexes by adding or subtracting, not surprisingly, an error was generated -complaining plaintively of *human* becoming a *clothing item* due to alteration of base vertexes. Would like to follow up on this to continue work on large and voluminous clothing items, and anything outside the realm of standard boxy clothes, but feel relatively powerless. Do not wish to make clothes that acts like hard body assets, want them to flow with the bodies if possible. Any help with new *helper objects* or advice on how to proceed with custom helper kit is appreciated, ty.

Helpers are part of the base mesh. The general rule of thumbs is not to mess with it. You mustn't add or delete vertices, because anything relies on the vertex numbers of the base mesh. You can, of course, translate these vertices. This is usually done by targets. Translating helper vertices for any other purpose than to fit body deformations will most probably lead to unpredictable results.

On the other hand: Especially long dresses and skirts don't work well with armature deformation. They work much better with cloth simulation.
