Diamond-shaped objects inside body?

Just as a matter of curiosity - what function do the diamond-shaped objects inside the body serve? I'm guessing they have something to do with Blender? If I don't use Blender, would removing them have an adverse effect in other apps?

They are used to calculate the bones when exporting, if you don't need them, they can be deleted.
