Getting Thumbs to show up

Postby loki1950 » Sat Dec 05, 2015 10:47 pm

Been doing some quick renders of the assets from the user contribs that did not have any is there a naming convention I assume the thumb image must have the same name as the mhmat file are there more like characters to not use etc... added some new materials the Materials Editor in the Utility's tab works there a few GUI usability issues that slow down workflow but it does what it says on the tin 8-)

Enjoy the Choice :)

Use PNG and rename it as .thumb. I think the 128x128 restriction does not exist anymore, At least I think, I saw thumbs with different resolution, that worked.

Yeah, using the basename of the file (like "test.thumb" for "test.mhmat") is needed for it to be found.

Otherwise, it should (by convention, not by necessity) be a 128x128 PNG file with a transparent background. I usually take a screenshot from inside MH and then replace the background color with transparency before scaling to 128x128.

If your thumb image has other dimensions it'll be scaled.

It turn out to be initial capitals and the use of spaces and under-scores for many word material names they do have to be the same.As for their creation I use MH's internal render set to 128x128 just use the model window to frame the asset at it's best ;) of course the render saves as .png

One of the problems is that Windows will hide filename extensions, as contrasted to Linux. The way to create names for the thumbs that always works is to use an ftp addon (I used FireFTP for Firefox) which will allow you to create any POSIX-compliant filename extension--in this case ".thumb"--that you need. So a .png picture can be renamed as .thumb.

It's pretty easy to change the Folder Options in Windows to show filename extensions--and if you're anything even approaching a power user, it's one of the first things you should do when setting up a new installation of Windows:

And on Windows 10 set your user to developer mode so you can use unsigned apps and figure out how to make all your old DX9 games work
