Combat boots

Postby learning » Thu Jan 01, 2015 7:59 pm

I've made an attempt to adapt a CC0 model of combat boots from blenderswap http://www.blendswap.com/blends/view/15722 to MH. After a lot of frustration and rather amateurish mesh editing by pushing and pulling vetices and faces, I've more or less created a half-decent mesh, but as for texturing, this I just can't do. Anyway, I think I'll share what I did, maybe someone would find it useful in current state, or maybe someone could take it over and make it better…

Thank you.
It's a nice idea indeed, to collect all CC0 models from Blendswap and transform them in MH assets.

PS: About frustration etc... if we have enough resources, we will work on a new version of MakeClothes much more easy to use.

Looks Good, I changed the lace from red to black though.

That's cool :)
I had a similar idea some time ago, when I used a blendswap model to create a piece of clothing for MH A7.
The Blendswap model was CC-BY though, so the original author credit had to be kept in all derived works.
The model and textures had a bit of a cartoonish look, though.

Yeah, there're probably a million ways to texture combat boots, they come in a ton of colors and materials, not just the laces, everything. It's just that I can't into texturing, so I used the texture map that was included into original model, with a lot of info lost while making the mesh into single-material single-UV-layer etc.

I textured those combat boots with four materials in Cycles; red velvet diffuse on the laces, a diffuse and glossy mix on the lace hooks, a UV mapped tiled leather texture on the boots (diffuse, spec, and normal maps), and a simple black diffuse on the soles.

MakeClothes only does Blender internal. The MHX2 importer will convert MakeHuman materials to Cycles, but the node setup is almost always off and must be edited to get the normals and specularity to look right.

Here's what they look like...
