I do not trust any version of Windows past 7. W10 can be wrestled into submission, but it takes a ton of work and the next update will bork your efforts. W11 is a hopeless mess of alpha ware pretending to be release gold. You cannot control any aspect of it locally since it is actually a cloud stub with (anti)social media crap permanently welded in. Even Apple is better, but not by much. Don't even get me started on Android...
In W11, most of your folders are aliases to actual files on OneDrive. There is no real fix for this. All you can do is manually back them up to a NAS or other local store. That needs to stay disconnected unless you are backing up the OneDrive files. Microsoft has annoyed me to the point of not only avoiding it like the plague it has become, but also, not recommending anything it offers. The same is true for Apple and Android.
I try to let folks know that there is a better way to do things if you want to keep your stuff local, where it really belongs since the cloud is somebody else's computer in all actuality. Linux is the answer. These days, most distros are user friendly, with Mint being the most logical choice for folks weening off of the above mentioned crapware. It is really free, has no ads, is stable, looks good, is customizable, totally controllable, and fast.
You can run it on both old and new kit. It is easy to set up and use. It simply works without getting in your way. It does what all operating systems should do. It waits on your next command and does not constantly bug you to notice or pay attention to anything other than the work you ask it to do. And as a bonus, it can deal with files you have made on other systems. The only cost to you is the time it takes to migrate from crap to gold.
Paddle faster. I hear charango music!
