Yes, the problem isn't getting https. The problem is a bug in the stone age mediawiki instance we have, causing a redirection loop when we try to mix protocols behind a reverse proxy.

All in all, at some point we'll have to replace most of the web site infrastructure. It's a huge job though.

In the meanwhile you might want to add the lack of SSL-encryption to the FAQ and maybe add a reminder to login / registration.
