Whenever I attempt to render anything the application just hangs and never even starts the render. This always seems to happen when it attempts to load libdisplay.so. Here is the last part of the terminal output prior to it hanging:

I'm running Makehuman 0.9.1 RC1 on Xubuntu Feisty (which is essentially the same as Ubuntu). Aqsis 1.1.0 has been installed from the repositories using apt-get. Makehuman was compiled from source.

I think it's not related to makehuman.
I'll contact directly aqsis developers to ask about this and osx too.

This could be a problem of the Debian package, as 1.1.x is actually an 'Unstable' version, but I'm not sure without trying.

I can probably set-up a VM to test this... could someone provide me with a DEB (Ubuntu 7.10) for MakeHuman?

Unfortunately I can't provide a debian version of MH because I use another OS, anyway I'll try to ask around...maybe marco-polo can help here?

I'm the Linux maintainer of MakeHuman. My decision was not to release any Linux binaries for the RC1 version. Official binaries will be released for the next stable version.
