Teeth visible through cheek in Blender Game Engine

Firstly, well done for the work to date on MakeHuman. It really is showing a lot of promise.

I have imported a figure from MakeHuman into Blender (2.49b and 2.5 alpha 2). The model renders fine but when starting the game engine artifacts appear and the teeth are visible through the cheek: Image
Turning off transparency prevents the teeth showing but then the background show through around the eyebrows.
Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Does the game engine have a z-buffer?

I can't find any settings related to z-buffering in the game engine.
