cannot turn on skin weight in open sim

I have followed all the tutorials I have found and I'm still unable to use my created avatar in opensim. I cannot turn on skin weight and joint positions. I am unable to make my default avatar disappear. And in Make Human I am unable to use the assets I download, I don't understand this because sometimes they show up and other times they don't. I'm having the worst time at this. Is there a COMPLETE tutorial covering all aspects of this transference? Thank you.

Oh I am using MH 1.1.1 and the lastest Blender

Well firstly are you using avastar to convert, or taking them straight from makehuman to blender then to opensim/sl? Secondly in opensim/sl are you using a full body alpha to mask your body from legacy avatar?
