What is still missing from the documentation?

Postby joepal » Wed Jul 06, 2016 6:48 am

After the somewhat cataclysmic death of the old drupal site, I think most of the documentation has now been resurrected and finally fixed in the wiki (see http://www.makehumancommunity.org/wiki/ ... tion:Index). Big thanks to Rob and Aranuvir for the effort in finalizing this.

Some of the docs are a bit outdated. But apart from that, can you think of anything large that is missing?

OTOH, I still have this on the list:

  • I want to merge Rob's "workflows" pages (http://www.makehumancommunity.org/wiki/ ... _Workflows) into the main documentation. There are placeholders for this, but I haven't gotten around to moving stuff yet
  • Since it's one of the most commonly recurring problems, there should be more verbose documentation on installing MHX2 on various platforms

This is not exactly an answer to your question. It's not about what is missing, but about how it is presented. A few days back I had a look at http://www.makehumancommunity.org/wiki/Main_Page. My very first idea was, that this page doesn't do much to motivate people to go on. If I were new to MH and ended up on this page I might probably leave and never come back. In my opinion this page is a wasted chance to attract new users.

It's about a year ago that something happended to this project. As a consequence not only developement stalled a bit. Forum activity dropped and keeps dropping. It's time to stop this process. MH is Open Source, but let's act as if it was for sale and start advertising.

My idea for the root page of the documentation:
-Don't tell the people that it's the root page, but tell them about MH.
-Present some cool stuff done with MH. 3D software is sold by presenting stunning rendered images.
-Make people want to get started with MH. Tell them about the user repo, the easy way to interact with Blender.

You might consider this redundant, but redundancy is a good thing, when it comes to presenting something, that might be completely new to some people.

After reading http://www.makehumancommunity.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=13465 I think we also need a "Getting started" section in the documentation. No deeper info about concepts, but just straight instructions.

I do not necessarily disagree with what you say, but personally I'm a tech guy, not a designer. I'm perfectly capable of building a wiki software solution from scratch in any of the 40 or so programming languages I'm familiar with, while at the same time failing miserably to make that wiki look visually appealing.

So these things would require that someone else stepped up and offered to help with them.

So public plea: Any web designers and/or other artists around who want to help shaping up the visual impression of the site? This doesn't necessarily stop with the wiki, the rest of the site could probably use an overhaul too.

Yes, that's our problem. Most of the people still around are probably more tech guys than artists. We definitaly need artists.
