What ever happened to the guys who were trying to make an open source version of Marvelous Designer? Did they give up?

THAT'S IT! Valintina. I should have remembered that because one of my boyfriend's employees has the same name. I kept thinking "Valentia.... Valhalla... Vavavoom... something with a V".

It's called Valentina: http://valentinaproject.bitbucket.org/ (it's a female name in Russia, Ukraine and supposedly a lot of other countries). Judging by the site, the project is very much alive with healthy monthly number of commits. I've never used MD and have no idea what it does, but Valentina is a program for creating patterns for clothes. It's very specialized and has a very steep learning curve (I for one couldn't teach myself to use it), but if you're a clothing specialist it will probably be quite handy. It has some relevance for MH project because of its feature of exporting patterns into .obj, but there's still a lot that has to be done before those would be usable for MH clothes (one notable issue is creating a well-formed pure quad mesh out of them).

Somewhat related: there is a tutorial video on the wiki on how to stich together cloth pieces in blender. I guess that is the step after valentina.
