US NAVY Uniforms

Postby solarforge » Mon Apr 13, 2015 1:10 pm

At the moment I am making some US NAVY uniforms (1950-1960) for an Indie game project ( Submarine - Simulator ) ;
The idea here is to make the clothes with blender, then export them to MakeHuman using the Addon "makeclothes".
So far I need to make two uniforms, one for the officers and another for the enlisted, I will post some more screen-shots in the next few days.

Here is a screen-shot (WIP) of the Officer Uniform :

That's pretty cool! :)
Did you model them from scratch or start from pre-existing templates?

Thanks :)

Yes I made them entirely from scratch ! The clothes were achieved by working with a low-poly model that uses a "Catmull-Clark" subsurf modifier (1 subdivision ).

A nit to pick here: While aboard ship especially underway that cover would not be considered appropriate. Off the ship, yes, it would be appropriate but even then they'd be wearing a ball cap with the command shield and name. Khakis were (are?) for E7 and above as well as O1-O10.

E6 and below would be either wearing dungarees with dungaree shirt or "undress blues" during that time period. Ball cap for cover.

I won't even get started on the evolution of the dress uniform for enlisted....

Wow, you really know a lot about uniforms! Maybe some day you'd start an uniform history project for MH?

You know what would be cool?
If we could have these uniforms 3D scanned from real versions.
I have the 3D scanning setup, but I lack the uniforms, sadly :)

That sounds awesome! Do you have any kind of historical reconstruction movement or something where you live? Those guys are all about historically accurate uniforms, maybe they'd let you borrow some for scanning! :D

Not that I'm aware of.
In any case, (historical) US army uniforms might be harder to come by where I live ;)
