Skin and hair with cycles in Blender

Postby petege » Sat Nov 22, 2014 10:29 pm

Hi,

I'm playing around with skin textures, hair and so on, for MakeHuman figures, rendered with cycles in Blender at the moment. This is the result I have now. I'm busy with the lips texture and the light.

The image texture, for the skin, comes with MakeHuman and for the bump I use a generated Blender texture. For the lips I made a separate material with more glossy and a deformed generated texture. I'm now busy to optimize that material.
The image texture for the eyes is also a MakeHuman texture, but in Blender I reduced the saturation a little bit and use a glossy material.

For the hair I used the particle system of Blender.

Hi,

This is the result I have so far. I used only the default image textures that comes with MakeHuman.

The result so far

I like to play around with the nodes and the particle system of Blender and I learn a lot by doing this. I want to share the material config I use for this model.
Important: I scaled the figure down, some setting needs to be changed for other sizes of the figures.

The eyes:
The color of the iris was for me to intensive so I turned it al little bit back by lowering the saturation of the image texture output.
Important: the color of the glossy shader must be complete white (RGB: 1.0) and not the default value RGB: 0.8.

The skin:
For a realistic looking skin also bumps are needed, I used the build in texture Voronoi for this.
The scale factor of the Voronoi Texture depends on the size of figure (I scaled the figure down).

The lips:
I selected the lips in edit mode and asign a new material to this selection, to make it possible to use different setting for the lips.
The scale factor of the Voronoi Texture depends on the size of figure (I scaled the figure down).

The hair:
I create a vertext group of the skin where hair must be and select this vertex group in the particle system.

Looks pretty good :)
Perhaps the pattern is a bit too large, and should be scaled down a bit. Especially in closeups the skin looks a bit leathery.

Thanks for your comment. The problem is that the generated texture is stretched on some places on the mesh, I am trying find a solution for this problem. I forgot to connect the the UV map to the voronoi textures, but this solves not problem complete. When I can't find a solution for this, I need to scale the texture down a little bit, but on some place it is then to small.

This is the result I have now with changing some parameters.

Looks good so far. I would suggest slightly reducing the strength of your displacement/bump map. Also, if you want to achieve photorealism, you MUST use Fresnel. Put it as the mix factor where your diffuse and gloss connect. The IOR of human skin is ~1.33 off the top of my head, but you may want to do some research on that.

Curious: why didn't you use Hair BSDF for shading the particle hair? I've been using it for a while with mixed results.

Needs to be finessed to get the results I'm looking for...
