Wushu Kung Fu: Wu Bu Quan (Five Basic Stances)

Postby brkurt » Thu Nov 20, 2014 10:46 pm

Hello everyone...here is a first draft of something I'm creating for the Digital Culture program we are creating at my college.
This is Wushu Kung Fu Wu Bu Quan, or the Five Basic Stances of Wushu Kung Fu. The background image is courtesy of Wushu Kungfu Online.

And here is the Blender file:

http://www.geekopolis.ca/blender/wushu_kungfu/wuBuQuan1_249b.blend

(A word of explanation about why I am using such an old version of Blender. A good IT friend of mine donated four Intel Xeon Quad Four 32-bit Servers--complete with rack--when his company upgraded to 64-bit. Unfortunately, Ubuntu Server only has the correct kernel up to 10.04, which comes with Blender 2.49b.)

Any and all martial artists interested please critique the moves when you run the animation (since it is only a rig, it should run with Blender 2.7x).

And here is the video, rough as it is! http://youtu.be/Mp2ACXHfuDQ

I never studied Kung Fu, instead I studied Tai Kwon Do for many years. Shouldn't the trailing foot be planted flat? Your study image would imply that and for sure my experience would tell me that would provide stability to the stance.

Thanks, Salty. You're right on that one. In order to do that however, I have to modify the rig by subdividing the present foot bone into metaTarsal and Tarsal, so that the instep can bend. That's first on my order of fix-its. :)

Now that I have 'roughed-in' the full series of moves, I'm going to subdivide them so that the look is easier to understand.
For example, the first position requires a good Horse Stance.

And here is the model, with the new foot bones, in Horse Stance.

And here is a better Cat Stance. I've also add a Crane Stance just before it.

The goal of this animated sequence is to have a tester for all my female characters, so that I can study effective cloth folds. For that, I need a realistic-as-possible set of moves. ;)

I will be updating from a single model. Here it is:

Here is the Horse Stance reconsidered, many thanks to Jade Xu for her online wushu tutorials.

And, going back to our original wushu kung fu model:

and here is a more up-to-date (2.64a) model. That's as far as Ubuntu 9.04 can go, in terms of glibc.

On to the Bow posture. This one required some frame-by-frame analysis, because although the final posture looks easy to pose, it is the preliminary posture that really needs the work.

Here is a sketch of what is required:

Image

The final posture requires a lunge with the left foot, the left arm scything across the torso to increase momentum. The left foot must be forward, with the right foot firmly planted on the ground, but dragging back. Many thanks to the Wushu Kung Fu video starring He XiJing from Zhong Guo XueXiao.

From here on, I'll post the preliminary and the final poses, and a video the connects the two.

Here are the Open GL screen shots. I have not closed the alternate hand, but left it open, because I can't see from the video what is happening.

Feel free to try the model yourself: http://www.geekopolis.ca/blender/wushu_kungfu/ellieWuBuQuan1_264a.blend

Okay, the first two stances are complete. A word of caution: make sure to unlock all the Transforms, because you have to control the Quaternion curves. Otherwise the rig will rotate in ways opposite to what you want.

Here is the Flash Palm / Right Punch based on the Horse posture.

And now on to the Cross Stance. Again, this has to be broken into (at least) two poses, Prelim and Final.

Here is the Prelim. Note how a 'wig rig' will be necessary to complete the motion of this model.

The final form of the third stance, or Cross Stance, deserves a post of its own. This is by far the hardest pose I have ever tried with the 1.1 model. That is because the legs must be tucked in tightly, with the leg left supporting the whole body, but without illegal mesh intersections.

A lot of folks are interested in the latest 1.1 meshes, so here's one for you Blender-heads to play with. I had to strip out the images and materials, as working retroactively can be quite a pain.

But here is my Gina Carano model with the latest casual suit, in the middle of Wu Bu Quan.

Image

You can try out the model yourself; it will be subject to a lot of refinements.

Here is a video of an earlier model, doing the same basic moves. Using camera angles, one can create an almost infinite number of variations.
