Guinnivere: Celtic Gown One

Postby brkurt » Tue Oct 21, 2014 5:01 pm

Hello everyone...I'm going to be doing a lot of detailing on this model, but I believe others can make use of it in its present state.

This is my 'Guinnivere', featuing the new rig, color-coded for easy use, and using Blender 2.72, which has some wonderfully sophisticated developments in mesh modelling.

Note: when I first created the gown, it was all once piece. I discovered that Blender's automatic weighting algorithm doesn't like gowns. It got arms and legs all confused.
So, I had to create a bodice with sleeves and a skirt, to get the weight painting right. Also, automatic weight painting goes very light on full weight (red or 1.00); which of course is the exact opposite of what happens when you assign vertex groups manually. :geek:

I'm using the designs from http://www.lindsayfleming.co.uk for my basic templates; after that, I will use ancient Celtic jewellery to detail the gown, so that I don't create a copyright problem. ;)

You can try the model for yourself. Have fun! :)

I'm thinking to open a separate subforum for Work In Progress, in order to give a proper section for this works, since in theory the gallery is only final rendering of finished scenes. ok?

Sounds like a good idea. My approach is to offer the model for others to work with, so in some ways it's never quite finished.

If there were more modelling clothing, making skin textues, hairs etc then maybe a resources forum could be opened offering alternates to the included geometries etc.

So, now that we have a WIP folder, let's give Guinnivere something interesting to do. I'll pose her in Wushu Kung Fu Horse Stance One, and we'll see what kind of problems arise with the gown mesh. It turns out there are quite a few!

Image

The problem is that the new code for transferring shape keys from one object to another--the safest way to try out a new shape key--is that it must have limits to the number and complexity of the polygons (although they are all quads). A simpler mesh will work, but not the gown.

The only work-around is to model the cloth mesh manually, and this requires a classical sense of folding cloth. I'll start with a simple, stylized version, and even the untrained eye will notice how unnatural it is.

Image

I've done something much better with an older mesh, but from here on out, I'll only post MH 1.1 models for Blender users. Be that as it may, here is GoGoGirl doing the same move:

Okay...now things get tricky. I want to create a cloak for this model, even before finishing the folds, because I'm going to have to incorporate the cloak into the folds.
So, I'm going to fork this WIP. Here is a the same model (but with my custom rig, which I will explain), with a full cloak and hood:

Let's have her do a back bend, to see what that will look like:

Note how the body, hair and 'soccer outfit' move at a different rate than the cloak. There at present is no easy way to co-ordinate four different meshes (that I know of, anyway) without using corrective shape keys. If anyone knows something about this, I would be happy to be enlightened.

Since a lot of people want a cloak right away, here is the Blender file, as is:

And here are the completed meshes, with UV maps (which of course could use some aesthetic tweaking).
I've added slippers, and a broach clasp at the neck.

Here's a fully rigged, UV texture mapped version of the same model. I'm moving toward more a subtle color combination.

There are so many possible styles that at this point, I'm just creating templates. For example, this cloak would most likely have some sort of inner clasps to create sleeves.

You can try this model yourself; it has a complete walk cycle, so press 'alt + a' to run the animation.
